2020 Steinberg Riesling trocken – VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS

Even in the glass, the “Rheingauer” of noble origin shows poise with that restrained opulence that only great Rieslings can command.

The nose opens with aromas of yellow citrus fruits, sweet-and-sour quince, and nuances of grapefruit, framed by fresh herbal tones. A delicate whiff of Thai basil adds intrigue without overwhelming.

On the palate, a taut, focused acidity leads with composure, giving space to the fruit’s gentle sweetness – all subtly structured by fine-grained tannins. This interplay creates a tension that defines the wine’s architecture. Salty and stony notes emerge, channeling the unmistakable minerality of the Steinberg* vineyard. Slate and quartzite contribute depth and clarity, adding complexity without weight.

In the finish, this mineral profile blends with nutty undertones and a hint of delicate sweetness – a quiet affirmation of this Riesling’s depth and precision. Puristic, focused, and enduring.

*The Steinberg vineyard is one of the Rheingau’s most storied crus – a walled monopole of the former Cistercian Abbey of Eberbach with nearly 900 years of viticultural history. South to southwest facing, its soils of slate and quartzite yield Rieslings of remarkable clarity, precision, mineral depth, and aging potential. Steinberg stands for monastic discipline in wine – pure, structured, and enduring.
