2020 Barbera d’Alba, Matteo Correggia

2020 Barbera d’Alba, Matteo Correggia

Definitely needs more time to mature!

A classic Barbera red in the glass with delicate pink reflections. Born in 2020 and only just “released” after six months in stainless steel, twelve months in barriques, and another six months of bottle aging—this Barbera d’Alba greets the nose with red fruit aromas, complemented by delicate violet and peppery notes.

On the palate, it feels pleasantly warm. Cherry fruit takes center stage, accompanied by hints of ripe redcurrants. The body is soft and smooth, with gentle tannins and a subtle sweetness, balanced by fine spice, moderate acidity, delicate bitterness, and a savory finish. The 14.5% ABV is barely noticeable, seamlessly integrated into the wine’s freshness.

Conclusion: Too young. My recommendation: let it mature for at least four more years—if not longer. The concentration will continue to develop, making it an even more enjoyable drinking experience.

My tip: Ornella Costa, the widow of Matteo Correggia, has an exceptional understanding of the Roero terroir and produces wines of remarkable quality. Her collection is consistently aromatic, elegant, and powerful—truly something special.
